Take It or Toss It? A Guide To Planning For A Move

Take It or Toss It? A Guide To Planning For A Move
We recently wrote a post about working on
getting your home ready for sale on the interior while it’s still cold out. Tackling overflowing closets by getting rid of items you no longer use was one of our main points. It got me thinking that while de-cluttering sounds easy to many of us (and for some it is) for others it poses the question of what to take and what to toss?

Take It or Toss It

Clothing – start by asking yourself when the last time was that you wore it. If the answer is more than a year ago the odds of wearing it anytime soon aren’t high. Toss it! If you still can’t decide ask yourself if you’d buy it again – perhaps in a different size or color. If the answer is no it’s time to toss it.

 Take It or Toss It

Household items – if you have multiple sets of dishes that you don’t use it might be time to get rid of some or maybe you’ve accumulated various sets of bed sheets over the years and aren’t sure what to take with you. We again recommend asking yourself a couple questions to determine the take it or toss it answer. If you’re using an item regularly chances are there’s no question you’re taking it but, if it’s been collecting dust ask yourself if you want to pay to move it.

Take It or Toss It

Sentimental items – this can be a broad category. Things from high school, items your grandparents gave you, something from on old flame – the list can go on and on. Hold an item in your hand (if you can) and see what memory it jogs. If you can’t recall where it came from you don’t need to move it with you but, if it’s an item that you’d be sad if it were broken or lost it’s likely worth taking.

HI Amanda S. Davidson - Great blog! It is so timely. You are so right. If you have not used (or worn) an item in 6 months, you probably won't. Unless it is a summer item. Nice work.

Amanda,

Even if you are not moving, your article is great.  We have been on a tossing spree lately.  I have a large bag in my closet to do just what you suggested with clothing.  I have already given one away, and we have the same thing was other parts of our home...A

Hi Amanda S. Davidson, I just moved and did this very thing but can certainly do it again. It's amazing how much "stuff" we accumulate and hold on to for whatever reason. Really like the infographic.

Love your graphic, and this is very good advice for those who are moving. A helpful handout to those who are selling their homes and listing with you. I know there are things on my list to declutter this year.

Good morning Amanda S. Davidson ,

What a great post and so timely as we start to think about spring cleaning! I'm not a fan of clutter so I try to purge my closets twice a year and it makes me feel better when I do!!!

Good morning Amanda. This is excellent period. Your analysis is right on point and I feel like I have purging to do today too.

Nicely done! I love the graphic! It should be very helpful to people, moving or not!

Would you pay to move it? I had to ask myself this question when I moved last year. I personally think everyone needs to move every three or four years so they can get rid of the clutter! :)

Amanda, I went through some closets and haven't tackled the others. I agree, if you haven't worn or used an item in a year or more... toss it!

Those are always tough decisions...I try to "pretend move" but things "pretend do not" when we do !

I have no idea how I missed this but, good grief, this is great advice, Amanda...for anyone who is either moving or needs a good 'clean out!'

Thank you for sharing this at the perfect time for me too - I'm in the midst of cleaning out a garage bay that has been stacked with 'storage' items for 3-1/2 years (since the movers put the items there) and it's finally gotten to me! I'm on a mission!

Happy Saturday, Amanda!

I am in the middle of trying to do this right now.  This is certainly a helpful guide!

My biggest problem seems to be my husband.  I need to pitch 'stuff' when he is not around.  I need to give him this guide ASAP!!

Thanks.

This is a wonderfu guide. We'll be moving at some point in the next few years, and I've started going through items and thinking, "Do I want to pay to move this?" Often the answer is no.
