While in Old Town to preview a home and take some photos of the waterfront my colleague and I stopped by Hen Quarter for lunch. She had seen their wonderful Yelp reviews and we decided we needed to check it out. They’re located where Austin Grill used to be on King Street. We were warmly greeted as we walked in and taken upstairs to a table overlooking King Street. Their open kitchen is on the opposite side of the restaurant and it's fun to people watch as you dine – best seat in the house.

Our waiter couldn’t have been more personable and truly seemed excited that it was our first time dining at Hen Quarter. He went out of his way to go over the menu with us, pointing out his favorite items. We started with the Watermelonade and it was light and refreshing. While we didn’t indulge they do have an extensive spirits and wine list. Appetizers range from biscuits to deviled hen eggs and I wish we could have tried them all. The fried green tomatoes with smoked mozzarella, and black-eyed pea salsa came highly recommended.

It was a tough decision between the special and chicken and waffles (we’ll be back for those soon) but, we both decided on the Hen Quarter Special – two pieces of HQ’s southern friend chicken, collard greens, smashed Yukon potatoes, and a biscuit. It was all wonderful, the chicken really impressed us because it wasn’t over battered. Just a light, crispy batter that didn’t overpower the chicken. I’m admittedly very picky about my collard greens because they’re often not chopped finely enough and have too much vinegar but, that’s not the case at Hen Quarter. Quite possibly the best collards I’ve had in the Alexandria area. Chopped perfectly and not too much vinegar. They had been cooked to perfection and were quite tender because of it.

Needless to say we’ll be back to Hen Quarter soon. Old Town has so many wonderful dining options to explore and I highly recommend checking out Hen Quarter. The atmosphere is rustic and welcoming and the food makes you feel like you’re eating a home cooked meal.

I haven't had dinner yet, and your picture and food descriptions now have me very hungry. LOL. I love the saying on their range cocktails. That cracks me up.
