Holiday Memories in Leesburg
Kathy Streib opened the door for all of us to share a favorite holiday memory this month. Even though our memories are all different it’s something that we can all connect on. Holidays are for making memories and there are many that I hold close to my heart. It’s hard to pick a favorite but, for the contest I’m going with the one that first popped into my mind.
I grew up in Leesburg Virginia and between the horses, cats, and dogs at home to the animals that needed care at my Dad’s animal hospital we never traveled to see family over the holidays. My Grandparents would always come up and spend Christmas at our house. I would countdown the days to their arrival. They only lived a few hours away and I saw the regularly but, at Christmas it was always extra special to be with them. They couldn’t get out of their car before I was at the door greeting them.
On Christmas morning I always had to wait upstairs until my parents gave the greenlight to come down and see what Santa had brought. My Grandfather would always wait upstairs with me. He was like a little kid too, we’d sit at the top of the steps imagining what Santa had delivered overnight and waiting for my Mom to say it was ok to come down. He’d always ask me if I thought I’d been a good girl that year.
Every year my parents would have something fun setup that would lead me to the big gift from Santa. One year I had to follow string that they’d strung from room to room throughout the house. It was so much fun following it and it eventually led me to the garage where there was a brand new bike with no training wheels. Big milestone! I’ll never forget that. My Grandfather probably already knew what I was getting but, he always made sure to be a kid with me too and it made waiting on the stairs so much more fun.
I'm not sure where the photos are from Christmas as a kid, my Mom probably has them in albums so I decided to share some from the last few Christmas gatherings we had with Granddaddy. My parents moved from the Leesburg house in 2006 and my Grandparents lived out their days with them in their home in White Stone. Lots of memories made there too that I'll cherish forever.
